Selecting an Attorney

You have made the decision to begin a legal proceeding. Start by being an advocate for yourself. After all, the attorney works for you, not the other way around.

Choosing an attorney to represent you in your family law matter is an exercise you want to get right the first time. The practice of law covers many different legal subjects. Just as in the practice of medicine, the trend is to concentrate on a single area. D.A.W.N. has taken the trend one step further by representing women, only, a single perspective. Today, many attorneys will accept family law matters that they are ill-equipped to handle just to supplement their practices. Being short on knowledge of family law and procedures and being unfamiliar with the court personnel is a ticket to a poor result, often irreparable.

In family law, the saying that "there is no substitution for experience" is especially true. The issues are personal and emotional. Will your attorney have the knowledge, skill and experience necessary to understand and handle the complexities of you matter and be able to develop the strategy necessary to help you achieve the result you are seeking? Will your attorney return your calls, provide you with copies of case documents and communicate with you in a manner that leaves you feeling comfortable and informed? Will your attorney be able to represent you in a skillful and efficient manner so that you are not paying excessively? Does the attorney require that you pay a non-refundable retainer fee? These are just some of the issues that should be explored during a face-to-face office consultation.
