Understanding Michigan Child Support
Parents have a legal obligation to provide financial support for their minor children. When parents do not reside together in the same household, child support can be obtained through a legal proceeding in Family Court, where the Michigan Child Support Guidelines are required to be applied. Under the formula, child support is calculated based on the annual income of each parent (from employment and non-employment sources), the number of children and the number of overnights spent with each parent during the year.
