Surviving Divorce: You WILL Get Through This

Surviving Divorce: You WILL Get Through This

I wouldn’t wish divorce (the surprise/non-amicable variety!) on my worst enemy! It’s emotional, it’s stressful, it’s failure, it’s rejection … and nobody ever likes to feel those things. How can you cope with these feelings?

Here are two ideas to help you get started:

1. Believe that it WILL get better.

I speak with women weekly who are getting divorced who are full of fear and emotions about what the future holds. They are scared and unsure they will be able to move forward. And, I speak with women weekly who HAVE gotten through divorce and who now look back and say, “That was the best thing that ever happened to me.” They are happier than ever before. Know this can happen to you too. Believe that things will improve … and they will!

2. Steer clear of vices!

It’s so easy to turn to vices during our periods of stress, but recognize that these things are not going to help you feel better in the long run. In fact, they will make things worse. I’ve seen women turn to drinking or eating too much, dating too much (to the point of promiscuity in order to feel wanted/needed), or even working out too much (and becoming far too thin). Recognize what form your potential vice might take, and be cognizant of exercising moderation in all things!

Granted, these may be easier said than done, but if you continue to focus on the positives when you can find them, and keep looking towards the future, then the stress and negativity WILL go away!
